Around the WorldWith 1/2-inch seams the squares should be 3-inch square. The black lines only represent seams. To plan a rectangular quilt, subtract the desired width from the desired length. The remainder should be approximately the length of the first line of squares [sitting like diamonds] in the center of the quilt.
